Japanese Michelin-recognized brands expand culinary presence in Taipei

High-end Japanese culinary brands are expanding their presence in Taipei through new permanent and pop-up locations.

Tonkatsu Narikura, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-recommended restaurant from Tokyo, has officially opened its first branch in the Da’an District of Taipei. Founded by Seizo Mitani, the restaurant utilizes a unique “snow powder” low-temperature frying technique and a meat-aging process to create premium tonkatsu. The Taipei location features an Omakase-style dining experience, serving multi-course menus that highlight high-quality local Taiwanese pork paired with Japanese culinary expertise.

Additionally, the Michelin-starred brand WAKAN, associated with the Tokyo restaurant Akasaka Ogino, is hosting a pop-up event at Regent Taipei from October 7 to November 15. Led by chef Satoshi Ogino, the brand specializes in “Nama” dorayaki—a soft, cream-infused version of the traditional Japanese pancake. The pop-up features exclusive flavors developed for the Taiwanese market, including a chestnut-scented white bean variety, alongside traditional matcha and red bean options.
