Japanese midfielder Hidemasa Morita to leave Sporting CP as contract expires
Japan international midfielder Hidemasa Morita confirmed he will depart Sporting CP when his contract ends in June, leaving the club on a free transfer. The 31‑year‑old, who has earned 40 caps for Japan, contributed 11 goals and 16 assists in 164 appearances for Sporting, helping the team win two league titles and a Portuguese Cup.
Morita posted an emotional farewell on social media, pledging lifelong loyalty to the club and stating he will not play for another Portuguese side. He was also omitted from Japan’s final squad for the 2026 World Cup. German club Borussia Dortmund has been linked with the player, joining speculation about his next destination.
The news marks the end of Morita’s four‑year spell in Lisbon, during which he became a fan favourite and started a family in Portugal.
