Japanese mobile providers IIJmio and mineo announce service and pricing changes

Japanese mobile service providers are implementing significant changes to their service offerings and device pricing.

IIJmio has launched a campaign running from September 1 to November 4, waiving the 2,200 yen SIM exchange fee for users on its ‘Giga Plan’ who switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM. The campaign also covers users switching between Docomo (Type D) and au (Type A) networks via eSIM. While the exchange fee is waived, users must still pay the standard SIM profile issuance fees. This move is seen as a preparation for upcoming iPhone releases that may rely exclusively on eSIM technology.

Separately, mineo has announced price increases for several SIM-free devices effective October 1. The price hikes affect unused second-hand iPhone 16 (128GB), iPhone 17 (256GB), and iPhone 17e (256GB) models, as well as two Aterm MR51FN mobile routers. Following the adjustment, the prices for these second-hand iPhones are expected to be approximately 10,000 yen higher than the official new retail prices offered by Apple.
