Japanese municipalities implement health point programs for community wellness
Municipalities in Japan are utilizing digital health point programs to encourage wellness and community participation among aging populations. In Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture, the ‘Kira-po’ program allows residents aged 65 and older to earn points through walking, brain training, and participating in local volunteer activities or city events. These points can be exchanged for PayPay points.
To support dementia awareness month in September, Koshigaya City is hosting information sessions for the app and a virtual reality (VR) experience designed to help citizens understand the lived experiences of those with dementia.
Similarly, Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture operates the ‘Hi ni Hi ni naru Po’ program. Originally for seniors, the program was expanded in April 2026 to include residents aged 40 and older. Participants earn points by completing health goals, attending medical checkups, or joining local community salons. Residents aged 65 and older have the option to exchange points for local gift certificates or PayPay points. These initiatives aim to foster social connections and provide support networks for individuals living with dementia and their families.
