Japanese municipalities implement measures to prevent bullying-related suicides

Local governments in Japan are strengthening measures to prevent bullying-related suicides following tragic incidents. In Kure City, Hiroshima, officials held a meeting to discuss prevention strategies after a junior high school student's death in 2022 was officially recognized as a suicide related to bullying.

During the Kure City Comprehensive Education Meeting, participants reviewed reports from a third-party committee and discussed new prevention measures. Attendees emphasized the importance of teachers remaining attentive to students' emotional changes and ensuring organized, school-wide responses to bullying incidents.

In Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, the Board of Education has implemented specialized support systems, including the assignment of veteran teachers dedicated to bullying response and the use of tablets to create an environment where students feel safer disclosing issues. These efforts follow a suicide involving a local student 15 years ago.
