China Consumer Association Warns Against Private‑Channel Medical Advertising Scams FAST-MOVING

On 31 July, the China Consumer Association together with the Market Supervision Society issued a consumer‑protection alert about deceptive medical‑product advertising that circulates through private channels such as WeChat groups and corporate‑WeChat customer‑service chats. The warning explains that many of these ads use medical staff as “endorsers” and claim the products can treat or prevent diseases, when the items are often merely health foods or ordinary foods without therapeutic effect. Typical tactics include limited‑time video links that disappear to evade regulation, offline‑event bait (e.g., free‑egg giveaways or community health talks), and language that creates anxiety by promising “cure‑all” results. Chinese advertising law bans any statements about efficacy, cure rates, comparative safety, or endorsement by medical professionals. Consumers are advised to avoid adding unknown contacts on WeChat, refrain from clicking temporary links, verify product licences (e.g., “blue‑hat” health‑food mark or “national drug‑approval” numbers), use reputable platforms, keep transaction records, and report violations to the consumer association or the police.
