Japanese museums announce major art exhibitions for late 2026

Several major art museums in Japan are hosting significant exhibitions throughout late 2026.

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is holding a special exhibition commemorating the 160th anniversary of Kojiro Matsukata and the 100th anniversary of Tokutaro Yamamura. The collection features modern works, including Rodin’s ‘The Thinker,’ and pieces from the Gutai Art Association. A symposium focused on sculpture conservation is scheduled for November 1.

Other notable upcoming exhibitions include:

• Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Art: ‘NEUTRAL COLORS NEW CIRCUIT,’ showcasing the unique publishing and printing activities of the NEUTRAL COLORS collective.

• Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo: An exhibition exploring modern Taiwanese and Japanese art through the lens of the ‘Windmill Poetry Society’ and the film ‘Sunday Walkers.’

• The National Art Center, Tokyo: ‘Picasso meets Paul Smith,’ featuring approximately 80 works from the Musée National Picasso-Paris reinterpreted through the design of British designer Paul Smith.

• Towada Art Center: A solo exhibition by contemporary artist Noboru Tsubaki, featuring large-scale works such as giant balloon sculptures.
