Japanese opposition parties oppose US potato import liberalization
Opposition parties in Japan are expressing strong caution regarding government plans to lift restrictions on importing fresh potatoes from the United States. The issue has emerged as a key debate topic in the Diet, driven by concerns from domestic farmers regarding potential pest infestations and increased price competition.
On October 22, representatives from the Democratic Party for the People, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, and the Democratic Reform Party met with Agriculture Minister Shin Takebe. These parties requested that negotiations with the US not proceed with a predetermined conclusion to allow imports, emphasizing that Japan must prioritize plant quarantine measures and the protection of its domestic production base.
Democratic Party for the People leader Yuichiro Tamaki stated opposition to any hasty agreements driven by US political pressure, noting that imports should not proceed without perfect quarantine capabilities. Similarly, Constitutional Democratic Party official Eri Tokunaga called for decisions based on scientific evidence rather than political pressure. Sanseito leader Sohei Kamiya also raised the issue in the Diet, arguing that food security requires protecting domestic agriculture and quarantine protocols first.
