Japanese paper-cutting artists hold solo exhibitions
Two distinct paper-cutting (kirie) artists are holding solo exhibitions in Japan, showcasing intricate works created with manual cutting techniques.
In Utsunomiya, self-taught artist Akira Nagaya is presenting approximately 110 works at the ALSOK Kita-Kanto Aoki Gallery. His collection includes depictions of Kabuki, phoenixes, and jazz musicians, as well as a “line series” featuring subjects like saxophones composed of lines thinner than one millimeter. Nagaya uses standard cutter knives to create detailed scenes that explore the interplay of light and shadow.
In Obuse, artist Hiroki Saito is hosting a solo exhibition titled “The Road I Once Walked” at the Garari Showcase. Saito’s work focuses on reinterpreting the landscapes of Katsushika Hokusai through a modern lens. His technique involves cutting black paper and applying dyed paper to the reverse side to create depth and color, specifically drawing inspiration from Hokusai’s use of Prussian blue. The exhibition features homage pieces that blend historical scenery with contemporary perspectives.
