Japanese police launch student recruitment initiatives to combat officer shortages

Police departments in Japan are implementing hands-on recruitment initiatives involving high school students to combat a declining number of applicants for police roles.

In Okayama Prefecture, the Tsuyama Police Station held an ‘Open Police’ event where local high school students served as facilitators. The program included collaborations with local radio stations to promote recruitment through school broadcasts. Participants were able to view mobile unit vehicles and motorcycle patrols, while headquarters staff provided detailed explanations regarding recruitment examinations.

Similarly, in Kochi Prefecture, the Nankoku Police Station organized an experiential event for high school and university students. Participants engaged in simulated investigative tasks, including door-to-door inquiries, fingerprint collection using specialized powder, and attending mock investigation meetings. The program also featured police dogs to demonstrate forensic procedures. These efforts aim to demystify the profession and showcase the appeal of law enforcement to younger generations amidst a steady decrease in exam applicants.
