Japanese police officers dismissed for drunk driving and cannabis use

Two Japanese police officers have been dismissed from their positions following separate criminal incidents involving alcohol and drugs.

The Osaka Prefectural Police issued a disciplinary dismissal for a 22-year-old officer from the Sakai Police Station. The officer, who was on leave for health reasons, was arrested in February after causing a car accident while driving under the influence in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The collision resulted in injuries to a female driver.

Separately, a 30-year-old officer from the Kuki Police Station in Saitama Prefecture was dismissed on September 3 following an arrest for violating the Cannabis Control Act. The officer was found to have attempted to receive 1.856 grams of cannabis via mail and admitted to using the drug. The officer reportedly stated that they had been using cannabis for at least five years, dating back to before joining the police force.
