Japanese prefectures launch initiatives to recruit teaching staff

Yamagata Prefecture and Okayama Prefecture have announced new measures to address teacher staffing needs through recruitment drives and specialized programs.

In Yamagata, the Board of Education will host a consultation event in Tokyo on November 2 and 3, 2026. The event is designed for individuals interested in migrating to Yamagata to work in schools, offering guidance on the educational environment, application procedures, and diverse working styles. The sessions will also provide information regarding the autumn selection process for the 2027 academic year, which targets current or former teachers for elementary, junior high, and special needs education positions.

Meanwhile, Okayama Prefecture is seeking temporary instructors for public schools. A new initiative called ‘School Trial’ will run from October 15 to December 14, 2026, specifically targeting license holders who lack teaching experience or have been out of the profession for over a year. This program aims to lower the psychological barriers to entering or returning to the teaching profession by offering short-term, part-time roles in elementary and junior high schools. Regular instructor registrations for various roles, including nursing teachers and administrative staff, also remain open.
