Hideki Matsui appointed Yomiuri Giants manager
Hideki Matsui, the legendary former Yomiuri Giants and New York Yankees slugger, has been named the new manager of the Yomiuri Giants. The appointment includes a three-year contract, with Matsui set to take charge starting October 30. He will wear uniform number 90, the same number worn by his mentor Shigeo Nagashima during his first managerial stint.
During a press conference in Tokyo, Matsui expressed his excitement about returning to his former club, noting that his mindset has shifted from the solemnity he felt when leaving for Major League Baseball 24 years ago. He stated, “Today I return to my hometown with a full smile,” and expressed a desire to lead the team into a new golden era.
Giants owner Kazuyuki Yamaguchi noted that the decision to appoint Matsui came after a period of crisis for the team, aiming to reclaim the Japan Series title, which the franchise has not won since 2012. Former Yankees manager Joe Torre expressed his support for Matsui, stating, “He is definitely capable, and very intelligent.”
