Japanese professor Kosuke Fukida celebrates Pontian culture in Thessaloniki

Kosuke Fukida, a Japanese university professor and international relations expert, has drawn significant attention at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) for his deep connection to Pontian culture. Fukida, who arrived in Thessaloniki years ago for studies, has become an honorary member of the Pontian Association ‘The Mithrioi’ of Kalamaria.

Fukida and his wife have mastered Pontian dances and the local dialect, often using the phrase ‘kalatsevo Ellinika’ to express that they speak Greek. He is visiting Thessaloniki alongside a group of Japanese nationals who have also learned traditional Pontian dances, such as the kotsari and serenitsa, to perform at local events.

The cultural bond between Fukida and the association has expanded internationally, including a seminar held in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022 and an invitation to Japan in 2024 as part of the Year of Tourism and Culture.
