Japanese railways announce family tours of depots and training centers

Japanese railway companies are hosting specialized family events to provide behind-the-scenes access to train operations and facilities.

In Himeji, the Himeji Line Promotion and Vitalization Alliance will hold a family tour at the Himeji Line Depot on November 21, 2026. The free event offers approximately 110 participants the chance to experience driving simulators, train conductor duties, and rail maintenance tasks such as driving rail carts and driving spikes. Applications open on October 8, 2026, and participants are required to use the Himeji Line to reach the venue.

Separately, JR East will host an event at the Shinkansen Education and Training Center on November 3, 2026. This paid event allows families to tour Shinkansen vehicles and training equipment. Activities include riding in a driver's cab guided by a professional, practicing conductor duties with door operations, and experiencing emergency rescue vehicle controls. Tickets are available via JRE MALL for a limited number of groups.
