Japanese regional leaders return to duties following cancer treatments

Shimane Governor Tatsuya Maruyama has returned to official duties on October 25 after undergoing surgery and treatment for stage 3 bladder cancer. Following his return, Maruyama attended a groundbreaking ceremony for a national highway in Matsue City. He stated that he has received all necessary treatment and is returning to work in good condition, though he will continue outpatient visits for observation. Regarding the upcoming gubernatorial election next spring, Maruyama indicated an intention to respond to requests to run, though he has not yet set a date for a formal announcement.

In Hiroshima, Mayor Kazumi Matsui is expected to return to work on October 26 after approximately one month of medical leave. Matsui was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor following a medical checkup on September 18. The mayor, who previously held online press conferences to explain his condition, plans to attend an extraordinary session of the city council upon his return.
