Japanese regions launch crowdfunding for forest conservation

Local governments and community organizations in Japan are utilizing hometown tax-based crowdfunding to support forest conservation and regional revitalization projects.

In Fukui City, the Minai Forest Environment Council is seeking 1 million yen through a crowdfunding campaign to maintain the natural satoyama environment and historical paths of Shiroyama. The project aims to preserve these areas as playgrounds for future generations, with donations available through the prefecture's hometown tax system until October 2026.

Similarly, Kyoto City has announced its “Forest Support Group Project” for fiscal year 2026. Starting October 1, 2026, the city will host several projects via the “Hometown Tax for Good” platform. These initiatives include developing pet furniture from local timber, preserving ancient tea plant roots, promoting Kitayama cedar forestry through educational workshops, revitalizing yuzu cultivation in aging communities, and creating traditional Buddhist art experiences using local wood.
