Japanese researchers advance lithium-ion battery technology
Researchers in Japan have achieved significant breakthroughs in the development and analysis of lithium-ion battery technologies.
A research group at Nagoya University successfully grew millimeter-sized single crystals of a pyrochlore-type oxyfluoride electrolyte, LLNOF. This achievement resulted in a world-record bulk lithium-ion conductivity of 16.3 mS/cm at 25°C. The study identified that the high conductivity is supported by a mechanism where fluoride ions undergo local relaxation in response to lithium-ion movement.
In a separate advancement, a collaborative research team including professors from the Chiba Institute of Technology and Nagoya University utilized nanotechnology to map electrochemical reactions within composite electrodes. Using Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microscopy (SECCM) with a 100 nm nanopipette, they successfully visualized non-uniform reactions in silicon-graphite composite anodes. This method allows for the identification of distinct reactions in graphite, silicon, and mixed regions, providing new insights into the formation of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) layer, which is critical for battery stability and lifespan.
