Japanese schools host disaster prevention workshops for students

Educational institutions in Japan are conducting disaster prevention workshops to increase awareness and preparedness among students and their families.

Takaoka High Support School held a PTA parent-child disaster prevention class involving students, parents, and staff. Participants engaged in activities such as learning about disaster prevention helmets, participating in quizzes, and testing emergency food rations. The event aimed to encourage proactive disaster awareness through hands-on experiences.

In Kumamoto Prefecture, Uenagi Elementary School in Yatsushiro City hosted a session for approximately 110 students in grades 4 through 6. Following significant damage from the July earthquake in the region, the workshop focused on the mechanisms of natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Instructors emphasized the importance of understanding local hazard maps and pre-determining family evacuation sites to ensure personal safety.
