Japanese schools issue heatstroke alerts as national survey highlights rising cases
Toyama Prefectural Toyama West High School warned students and parents to watch for heatstroke, urging frequent water and electrolyte intake, regular breaks, appropriate clothing, and prompt reporting of symptoms. The school also advised families to monitor children’s hydration and rest, and indicated that activities may be limited when a heatstroke alert is issued.
A nationwide survey by Saraya Co. found that emergency transports for heatstroke have more than doubled over the past five years. About 20% of respondents said they had experienced heatstroke themselves. Most start preventive actions in July, with 80% drinking water and roughly 70% using air‑conditioners or fans, but only around 10% begin measures as early as May despite transports occurring from that month. The study calls for earlier and broader preventive measures.
