Japanese semiconductor and industrial firms report mixed operational updates

Major Japanese industrial and semiconductor players are navigating varying operational challenges. SUMCO reported a decline to an operating loss of 6.36 billion yen for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending December 2026, despite a 4.7% increase in revenue. This loss is primarily attributed to a significant rise in depreciation costs following large-scale investments in 300mm silicon wafer production capacity. However, the company's cash flow from operating activities remains positive at 46.5 billion yen.

Renesas Electronics has announced that its Kawashiri plant in Kumamoto has returned to pre-earthquake production capacity following disruptions caused by an earthquake on July 28. The Nishiki plant had previously restored its capacity on July 31. Renesas management indicated that the overall impact on business performance is expected to be minimal.

Kyocera's machine tool division is focusing on the recycling of tungsten scrap to ensure stable raw material supplies amid rising prices. The company is also expanding its AI-driven monitoring services and sensing solutions to meet increasing demands in the automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors.
