Japanese shrines prepare for August 2026 religious festivals

Various religious ceremonies and festivals are scheduled to take place at shrines in Japan during August 2026.

In Sano City, Kamo Wakeru Shrine will host a joint prayer festival on August 30, 2026. The event will bring together three different groups: Shinto, the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism, and the Izanagi-ryu prayer method. The ceremony aims to pray for health and protection against the summer heat. Special collaborative commemorative stamps (goshuin) featuring art from Enmojiya and Mika Kashiwakura will also be available.

In Otaru, the Otaru Jimori Inari Shrine is scheduled to hold its annual festival on August 29, 2026. The event will include a shrine ceremony and a performance by the Otaru Shio Taiko drums. While the festival will not feature a portable shrine procession (mikoshi watoshi) this year, it remains a significant local tradition for the community.
