Júbilo Iwata players and manager slam refereeing after J2 loss
Controversial refereeing decisions sparked intense criticism following a J2 League match between Yokohama FC and Júbilo Iwata at MUFG Stadium on August 16. Yokohama FC secured a 3-1 victory, but the match was overshadowed by a disputed penalty awarded to Yokohama FC after a challenge by Danilo, which players and observers claimed occurred outside the penalty area.
Former Japan international Takashi Inui expressed strong frustration with the officiating, stating, “The referees are terrible. It’s just too much,” and calling for the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the J2 League to prevent such errors. Reports also noted that Inui declined to shake hands with the officiating crew following the match.
Júbilo Iwata manager Tadahiro Akiba addressed the loss and the officiating, emphasizing that while the team must develop the strength to overcome such frustrations, he would not tolerate the squad becoming divided or losing focus due to external circumstances. The match drew a significant crowd of 53,973 spectators, marking the second-highest attendance in J2 history.
