Japanese stock market trends focus on speculation and psychology
Investment strategies in the Japanese market are increasingly influenced by speculative trends and psychological factors. Investor Taro Yuki highlights the distinction between two phases of speculation: “narrative speculation,” where stock prices move based on the potential of new technologies or business expansions, and “numerical speculation,” where the focus shifts to whether those narratives translate into actual revenue and profit.
As an example, Asterisk Inc. saw a significant stock price drop following a downward revision of its earnings forecast due to delayed projects. However, Yuki notes that because the underlying business narrative remains intact, the reset in price could present a future opportunity once actual sales are confirmed. Similarly, Terra Drone is noted for its entry into the defense equipment sector.
Beyond corporate fundamentals, psychological research suggests environmental factors like weather may impact market behavior. Citing research by David Hirshleifer of Ohio State University, which analyzed data from 26 countries, studies indicate that sunny weather can lead to more optimistic investor sentiment, potentially correlating with rising stock prices. While rain or snow does not necessarily predict a decline, the psychological uplift from sunny days suggests that, from a purely behavioral standpoint, selling stocks on sunny days may align with periods of higher prices.
