Japanese students launch food products through industry-academic partnerships

High school students in Japan are seeing their culinary ideas reach the commercial market through collaborative development projects.

Nippon Access has begun selling three varieties of frozen onigiri developed by students from three runner-up schools of the 14th ‘Gotochi! Zesshin Umaimon Koshien’ competition. The products, which include flavors such as ‘Kimutaku Mayo’ and ‘Juicy Onigiri’, were launched following the successful completion of crowdfunding goals on the company’s ‘Sakinitabetaio’ platform.

In a separate initiative, Sanshu Seika is releasing a new spicy chicken-flavored pasta snack designed by students from Kasukabe Technical High School. This project involved a partnership between industry, academia, and local government, including cooperation from Nihon Pharmaceutical University and Kasukabe City. The snack began nationwide distribution on October 14, 2026, serving as a practical educational tool for students to experience the full product development process.
