Japanese students participate in local agricultural workshops

Elementary school students in Japan are participating in hands-on workshops to learn about their regions' agricultural specialties.

In Wakayama Prefecture, fifth-grade students at Kitano Kami Elementary School attended a lesson regarding the prefecture's plum production, which accounts for approximately 60% of Japan's total yield. Students learned about the history of plum cultivation and the health benefits of citric acid. During the practical session, they prepared plum juice by layering fresh and frozen green plums with sugar in bottles.

In Akita Prefecture, fourth-grade students at Ogumogawa Elementary School in Yokote City engaged in making jam using the local watermelon variety, ‘Akita Natsumaru’. Under the guidance of a local producer and high school students, the children harvested the fruit, removed the seeds, and boiled the pulp to increase the sugar content for the jam.
