Japanese temples announce seasonal nighttime cultural events for 2026

Various Japanese temples are hosting seasonal nighttime events in 2026 to offer cultural experiences and mitigate heat-related risks.

Daigakuji in Kyoto will hold its ‘Kangetsu no Yube’ (Moon Viewing Evening) from September 25 to September 27, 2026. The event features the Osawa Pond, one of Japan’s top three moon-viewing locations, where visitors can observe the moon reflected in the water. Special tickets are available for boat excursions on the pond.

Shodaiji is organizing ‘Yusuzumi Mairi’ (Evening Cooling Visits) across three locations in Chiba, Saitama, and Tokyo during August 2026. Designed to prevent heatstroke during summer grave visits, the initiative encourages visiting after sunset. The paths will be illuminated by solar lanterns co-developed with the Uchihara Satoshi Design Office. These locations will also feature festival stalls selling shaved ice, popcorn, and other snacks.
