Japanese Temples Host Summer Wind‑Chime Festivals

The Minamida Hachiman Shrine in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture is holding a "Suzuri‑Bell Festival" from July 18 to August 31, 2026. Around 700 Edo‑style wind chimes are displayed throughout the shrine grounds, and a free puzzle event invites visitors to locate eight cat‑spirit chimes, with prizes for 26 winners. Evening lighting continues until about 9 p.m., and the shrine’s main hall remains open despite ongoing seismic‑retrofit work.

At Tada‑dera, a historic temple in Obama, Fukui Prefecture, about 200 wind chimes are exhibited until August 16. The chimes, painted in a deep "Obama blue," create a cool sound that visitors can enjoy while touring the temple complex, which also houses the nationally‑designated Yakushi Nyorai statue and a Heian‑era Eleven‑Faced Kannon known as the "Mona Lisa of Wakasa." The display is part of the temple’s seasonal effort to offer relief from summer heat.
