Japanese towns host Ayu fish catching festivals for families

In Fuchu City, Hiroshima Prefecture, a summer‑break Ayu (sweetfish) catching event attracted about 300 participants, with organizers releasing roughly 13,000 fish into the Ashida River tributary. Children struggled to grab the fast‑moving fish, many describing them as slippery, and the captured Ayu were grilled on‑site for participants to eat.

In Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture, the "Ayu Festival" at Arakawa Water’s Edge Park featured a friendly competition where 40 anglers vied to catch the most fish. The winner, 34‑year‑old Hitoshi Gotō, landed 26 Ayu and received prizes. Children also took part in a hands‑on catching activity, later skewering the fish and enjoying them grilled.

Both events were organized by local fishing cooperatives and tourism groups to promote river stewardship and provide family‑friendly recreation.
