Japanese transport firms launch regional mobility and logistics pilot programs

In Hiroshima, bus operators including Hiroshima Bus, Hiroshima Electric Railway, and Hiroshima Kotsu will launch a demonstration service called the ‘Koimiyuki Line’ starting October 1, 2026. This initiative, part of the ‘Bus Cooperation and Co-creation Platform Hiroshima,’ aims to improve east-west mobility within the delta urban area and address traffic congestion caused by construction on the National Route 2 West Hiroshima Bypass. The service will introduce four new bus stops and utilize existing routes to connect key areas such as Nishi-Hiroshima Station, Kanon, and various medical facilities.

In Miyazaki Prefecture, Yamato Transport and Miyazaki Kotsu are launching a public rideshare demonstration called ‘Nekomiya Bus’ in the Hyuga and Nyugo regions. Running from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2027, the project aims to tackle depopulation and driver shortages by simultaneously transporting passengers and cargo. Using large one-box vehicles, the service will allow Yamato Transport to consolidate delivery tasks with existing bus routes, improving logistics efficiency while maintaining essential transportation for local residents. Full-scale operations are targeted for April 2027.
