Japanese TV series VIVANT sparks diplomatic tension with China
The popular Japanese television series VIVANT has triggered significant diplomatic and commercial friction following its second season. The drama depicts a fictional Chinese intelligence agency, “Xinxi,” as a primary adversary to a Japanese secret intelligence unit.
Chinese state media, including CCTV and Global Times, have criticized the show, alleging it portrays Chinese intelligence officers as cruel and uses imagery reminiscent of historical atrocities. In response, the president of TBS, the series producer, stated that the show is a work of fiction intended for entertainment and has no intention of inciting national hostility.
The controversy has extended beyond media criticism into the business sector. Sanrio’s Chinese subsidiary announced it would terminate collaborations and promotional activities related to the series following the backlash from Chinese state media.
