Japanese TV star Kiriko Isuno shares end‑of‑life plans, discards washing machine

On July 31, Japanese television personality Kiriko Isuno appeared on TV Asahi’s daytime program "Tetsuko’s Room" (徹子の部屋). She explained that she began an end‑of‑life project (終活) last year, drafting an ending‑note that lists bank accounts, credit‑card details and burial wishes.

Isuno said she chose to give away or discard several household items. After her washing machine broke, she decided not to replace it and has been hand‑washing clothes for about a year and a half, using a coin‑laundry for larger pieces. She also threw away a large bath towel and high‑heel shoes, citing space and safety reasons, and now uses smaller towels and gives the shoes to her niece. The changes, she noted, have made her living space feel larger and more comfortable.

The interview also touched on her personal history, including a divorce from a husband 24 years her junior after a seven‑year marriage and a stroke she suffered in 2014.
