Japanese universities launch STEM outreach programs for students

Japanese universities are launching new initiatives to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among younger students.

Tokyo University of Technology has announced eight workshops for the second half of its ‘D-SciTech Program’ running from October through March 2027. The program, which has expanded to three locations, includes sessions on robotics, science experiments, and light science. Notably, the university will host a science experiment workshop specifically for elementary school girls. Collaborative sessions with industry partners will also cover topics such as resource recycling, PC assembly, and 3D printing.

Additionally, The University of Tokyo will host ‘Mirai o Nozoko!’ (Let’s Look into the Future!) on October 24, 2026. This event is designed to support female junior and senior high school students pursuing science-related career paths. The program features hands-on research experiences in fields such as mineralogy and marine biology, alongside lectures and networking opportunities with graduate students. The initiative is supported by Kioxia Holdings as part of efforts to promote women's participation in STEM.
