Japanese watchmakers Citizen and Casio unveil battery‑free solar watches

Japanese watchmaker Citizen introduced two new models, the EM1230‑54X and EM1234‑53L, equipped with its patented Eco‑Drive technology. The watches harvest energy from any light source, store it in an internal accumulator and operate without the need for battery replacement, offering a convenient solution for users of smart and fitness watches.

Casio announced the G‑Shock G‑Steel series, the GST‑B1000‑1A and GST‑B1000‑2A, which use a biopolymer strap to cut weight from 118 g to 58 g while retaining the brand’s robust construction. These models also feature solar charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and high water‑resistance, allowing users to sync with smartphones and even locate lost phones. Both companies aim to eliminate regular battery changes and improve durability for everyday wear.
