Japanese whisky industry sees new releases and market maturity

Kanosuke Distillery Co., Ltd. has announced the release of ‘Kanosuke Mellow Blend,’ a new blended Japanese whisky to be sold nationwide starting November 27, 2026. The product is crafted using 100% in-house spirits from the Kanosuke Distillery and Hioki Distillery, utilizing the company’s 140-year history of shochu production to inform its whisky-making techniques.

The blend features Irish-style pot still spirits made from unsprouted barley and malt, combined with fruity malt spirits from the Kanosuke Distillery. The company aims to offer a more casual, everyday option for whisky enthusiasts, designed to pair well with various foods and suitable for highball preparations.

In a broader industry context, the 20th Modern Malt Whisky Market was recently held in Osaka and Tokyo. Organized by Sanyo Bussan, this professional-only event showcased the maturation of the Japanese whisky market. While the industry began in a period of skepticism, the event highlighted the coexistence of major global brands and emerging craft distilleries, with many new producers now able to showcase aged samples rather than just new make spirits.
