Japanese WWII Submarine I-52 Found with 2 Tons of Gold at 5,180m Depth

The Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-52, on a secret 1944 mission to transport strategic materials to Europe, was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean on 23 June 1944 after Allied forces intercepted its communications and attacked the vessel. All 109 crew members were lost.

Research led by Paul Tidwell re‑examined wartime records in the early 1990s, correcting the wreck’s estimated position by about 16 km. A deep‑sea survey in 1995 using sonar and a remotely operated vehicle located a large object at roughly 5,180 metres below the surface. The vehicle confirmed the wreck as I‑52, noting that the hull remained largely intact despite more than half a century on the seabed.

Historical documents indicate the submarine was carrying about 270 tonnes of cargo, including tin, tungsten, molybdenum, natural rubber, quinine, and approximately 2 tonnes of gold cast into 146 bars. The gold cargo is valued at over US$200 million (about 5,200 billion VND).
