Japanese yen faces pressure amid interest rate uncertainty
The Japanese yen is facing increased volatility and downward pressure due to low market liquidity during a three-day holiday in Japanese markets and uncertainty regarding the Bank of Japan’s future interest rate path. The currency recently fell by more than 2% over a week, trading near 156.88 to 157.33 against the US dollar.
Investor sentiment has been impacted by a lack of clear signals from the Bank of Japan concerning the pace of future rate hikes. While the central bank recently raised borrowing costs, the decision was met with internal dissent from two board members, suggesting a more dovish stance compared to other major central banks like the US Federal Reserve.
Market analysts warn that low liquidity during holidays could exacerbate currency movements and amplify the impact of any official government intervention. Japan previously spent a record 15.4 trillion yen on foreign exchange interventions through August 26 to support the yen.
