Bank of Japan and Federal Reserve rate decisions drive yen and dollar volatility

Global currency markets are bracing for pivotal interest rate decisions from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan (BOJ). The Japanese yen has strengthened significantly, reaching a near seven-month high against the US dollar, driven by expectations that the BOJ will raise its policy rate by 25 basis points during its September 17-18 meeting.

This shift in the yen's value is linked to the unwinding of carry trades as the interest rate gap between the US and Japan narrows. Additionally, speculators have turned net long on the yen for the first time since February. Meanwhile, the US dollar has shown strength as investors weigh the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike, with money markets indicating a high probability of an increase in response to rising energy prices and inflation concerns.

Rising oil prices, which have climbed above $100 per barrel, are complicating the economic landscape. For Japan, high energy costs act as a structural headwind, while for the US, they reinforce the case for hawkish monetary policy. The upcoming central bank decisions are expected to influence global markets, including volatility in Bitcoin ETFs and shifts in international trade dynamics.
