Japan records September trade deficit of 536.5 billion yen
Japan recorded a trade deficit of 536.5 billion yen in September, marking the fifth consecutive month of negative trade balance. While exports rose 16.7% year-on-year to 10.9 trillion yen, imports grew by 18.9% to 11.5 trillion yen, driven largely by soaring energy costs.
Export growth was supported by strong demand for semiconductors and AI-related products, with semiconductor exports surging 49.4% and manufacturing equipment rising 43.9%. Automotive exports also saw a 15.1% increase. Geographically, exports to the United States rose 22.9%, while shipments to China grew by 8.6%.
On the import side, crude oil imports increased by 51.1% in value. High energy costs are attributed to Middle East tensions and the need to utilize alternative shipping routes to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has increased procurement costs. For the first fiscal half (April–September), Japan’s total trade deficit reached approximately 2.81 trillion yen, as both imports and exports hit record highs.
The widening deficit and high resource prices continue to exert downward pressure on the yen, complicating the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy decisions regarding interest rate hikes.
