Japanese yen rises as JGB auction sees record demand

The Japanese yen strengthened against the US dollar following a 20-year Japanese government bond (JGB) auction that saw record demand, with bids reaching 5.84 times the amount sold. Analysts noted that the auction serves as a signal of returning institutional demand for Japanese assets, which are increasingly viewed as a haven amid political and fiscal volatility in Europe.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda maintained the central bank’s existing stance on tapering bond purchases. Ueda stated that the bank would monitor market conditions comprehensively, including rapid rises in long-term rates or signs of destabilized market function, before deciding on emergency bond market operations. He emphasized that failing to adjust rates appropriately could lead to higher long-term yields due to inflation overshoot fears.

In Europe, political instability continues to impact markets. France has implemented curfews in several cities to manage anti-government protests, while Italy has announced the deployment of 500 troops following recent unrest. Despite these risks, the euro has shown some resilience in recent trading.
