Japanese yen strength and AI optimism drive market shifts
A strengthening Japanese yen and growing optimism surrounding artificial intelligence are driving significant shifts in the Japanese equity markets. JPMorgan Chase strategists suggest that a stronger yen could ease upward pressure on Japanese government bond yields, potentially acting as a catalyst for a recovery in AI and semiconductor stocks in Tokyo. While this trend may benefit technology and real estate sectors, analysts warn it could pressure profit margins in the automotive and logistics industries due to reduced foreign currency conversion values.
SoftBank shares rose 5% on Wednesday, continuing a rally that has seen the stock gain nearly 38% since September 3. This surge is attributed to investor enthusiasm for AI investments, bolstered by interest in Arm and OpenAI’s recent developments. Despite the yen's appreciation, which can lower the yen-denominated value of SoftBank’s dollar-based overseas assets, the company’s net asset value remains substantial.
Concurrently, market expectations for the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates in September have increased significantly, rising from approximately 65% to 98%. Investors are closely monitoring these developments alongside the potential unwinding of yen-funded carry trades.
