Japan's 2026 Silver Week Travel Rankings: Hokkaido Leads Domestic Picks, Italy Tops Overseas

Japan will observe a five‑day Silver Week holiday from 19 to 23 September 2026. A survey by Hankyu Travel of 518 adults aged 20 and over identified the most popular destinations for the break.

Domestically, Hokkaido ranked first, followed by Okinawa, Tokyo, Fukuoka and Kyoto. Overseas, Italy was the top choice, with Switzerland second and France and Taiwan tied for third, while the United Kingdom placed fifth. The poll found that 40 % of respondents intend to travel within Japan, 10 % plan an overseas trip, and 12 % are considering both.

Hankyu Travel is promoting tours to the highlighted locations and warns that sales are likely to sell out quickly because of the rarity of the long holiday, urging travellers to book early.
