Japan's 5G coverage hits 98.6% as ministry advances Wi‑Fi 6 GHz expansion

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reported that nationwide 5G population coverage in Japan will reach 98.6% by the end of fiscal 2025, up from 98.4% in 2024 and 98.1% in 2023. The highest coverage rates of 99.9% are in Kanagawa, Osaka and Okinawa prefectures, while Shimane records the lowest at 89.2%. The government’s digital infrastructure plan targets 99% coverage by the end of fiscal 2030.

In a related move, the ministry is promoting the extension of the 6 GHz band for Wi‑Fi use and enhancing the dynamic frequency selection (DFS) rules for the 5 GHz band. After a consultation process involving industry experts, including a special advisor from Nippon Electric Company (NEC), new technical standards will align Japan’s wireless LAN environment with international specifications, aiming to improve speed and reliability for domestic digital services.
