Japan's AI market shifts toward physical robotics and edge intelligence

The machine learning and physical AI sectors in Japan are transitioning from experimental phases to practical industrial implementation. Japan's machine learning market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 33.1% between 2025 and 2035, reaching an estimated $28.2 billion by the end of that period.

There is a growing strategic focus on physical AI—technology that uses sensors and cameras to perceive and act in the real world—to address Japan's severe labor shortages. While Japan maintains strengths in traditional industrial robotics, China has emerged as a leader in physical AI, with Chinese humanoid robot shipments expected to reach approximately 14,400 units in 2025, representing an 84.7% global market share.

Experts suggest Japan's competitive advantage may lie in combining its existing expertise in robotics and hardware with advanced AI “brains” and data. Key opportunities exist in edge machine learning, where AI models are executed directly on machines, vehicles, and sensors rather than relying solely on cloud infrastructure. This evolution is critical for sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and logistics.
