The UNESCO World Heritage Committee met in Busan, South Korea on 26 July 2026 and decided to inscribe the Asuka‑Fujiwara archaeological sites in Nara Prefecture, Japan. The new entry comprises 19 sites dating from the 6th to 8th centuries, including palace ruins and the Takamatsuzuka tomb with its colourful murals. The inscription is Japan’s 22nd cultural World Heritage property and the 27th World Heritage site overall (22 cultural, 5 natural). The committee highlighted the sites’ “outstanding universal value”, noting their illustration of ancient capital formation, cultural exchanges with the Chinese mainland and the Korean Peninsula, and the introduction of Buddhism. The advisory body ICOMOS, after an on‑site evaluation in September 2025, recommended the inscription in June 2025. The property has been on UNESCO’s tentative list since 2007, and the decision is expected to boost research, preservation efforts and tourism to the region.
