Japan's August 2026 Holiday Schedule Includes Mountain Day

In August 2026 Japan has a single nationally designated holiday, Mountain Day, observed on Tuesday 11 August. The day was established in 2016 to encourage appreciation of mountains and does not create a multi‑day weekend because it falls on a weekday.

The traditional Obon holiday period runs from 13 August (Thursday) to 16 August (Sunday). When combined with Mountain Day, many people can take leave from 8 August (Saturday) through 16 August (Sunday), resulting in a nine‑day stretch often referred to as an extended summer break. Earlier years saw up to nine consecutive days of holidays when additional weekdays were taken off, but the 2026 calendar offers a shorter official holiday count.

No other public holidays are scheduled for August 2026, making Mountain Day the sole statutory break for the month.
