Japan's auto industry pivots toward connected autonomous ecosystems

Japanese automakers are shifting their focus in the autonomous vehicle race, prioritizing the development of a connected transportation ecosystem over individual vehicle self-driving capabilities. This strategy aims to reduce accidents and maintain mobility for Japan's aging population through integrated smart infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) has identified integrated autonomous mobility as a top industry priority. Koji Sato, President of JAMA and Toyota, noted that while Japanese companies possess competitive technology, they must accelerate the practical application of these products.

Technological development is moving from rule-based driver assistance to end-to-end (E2E) AI models that process sensor data directly to make driving decisions. Toyota plans to implement AI-driven autonomous technology in commercial vehicles by 2028, combining E2E with rule-based safety mechanisms to mitigate risks. The company also aims to develop Level 4 autonomous commercial vehicles for transport and shuttle services by 2030.
