Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary reflects on Takaichi administration's first year
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara has reflected on the challenges faced during the first year of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration. In an interview, Kihara identified the administration's inception as its most critical moment, noting that the LDP held a minority in both houses of the Diet and faced the sudden departure of Komeito from the coalition. This created a significant risk that Takaichi might not be elected Prime Minister during the extraordinary Diet session.
Kihara attributed the administration's sustained high approval ratings to its ability to grasp public needs and execute policies decisively, even those that divide national opinion. He emphasized a commitment to policies that serve Japan's long-term national interests, comparing current decisions to past landmark legislation.
The administration has also navigated diplomatic tensions, particularly regarding relations with China, and domestic issues such as the establishment of a National Intelligence Agency and the passage of laws related to the 'sub-capital' concept. Despite these hurdles, the administration has maintained a support level exceeding 60 percent.
