Japan's Family Restaurants See June Sales Rise While Department Stores Slip
In June 2025 Japan’s leading family‑restaurant operators reported modest growth. Sukairaku Holdings recorded a 1.7% increase in same‑store sales, Saizeriya posted a 9.7% rise, Joyful saw a 1.4% gain, and Royal Host slipped 0.2%. Sukairaku’s overall sales grew 5.1% despite a 1.4% drop in customer count, while Saizeriya’s total sales climbed 10.7% with an 8.8% rise in customers.
Contrastingly, the department‑store sector posted a year‑long decline. The Japan Department Store Association’s survey showed total 2025 sales of ¥5.675 trillion, a 1.5% year‑on‑year decrease – the first negative result in five years and 793 billion yen below the pre‑COVID 2019 level. Domestic sales fell marginally by 0.1%, while tax‑free (inbound) sales plunged 12.7%. The data underscores divergent trends within Japan’s broader retail landscape.
