Japan's Finance Minister Katayama targets budget cuts to fund food tax reductions

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has expressed strong intent to secure funding for proposed food consumption tax reductions by aggressively cutting wasteful government spending. Following her reappointment in the second Takaichi Cabinet, Katayama has also taken on the additional role of Minister in charge of the consumption tax and support fund bill.

The government aims to lower the consumption tax on food from 8% to 1% starting in fiscal year 2027. However, the plan faces significant challenges as the estimated 5 trillion yen required for this tax reform has not yet been fully secured. While Katayama stated she would review and overhaul budget requests from various ministries to find these funds, critics have questioned the feasibility of such a massive reallocation.

During a televised discussion, commentator Jin Mayama expressed skepticism regarding Katayama's ability to execute these cuts, noting that as a former Ministry of Finance official, she should be aware of the practical difficulties involved in such a large-scale budgetary shift.
